What is the Open Coffee Club all about?

It is an attempt to establish recognized, open and regular meeting places where entrepreneurs can meet with investors (and anyone else who fancies coming along) in a totally informal setting. The key is a regular place and a regular time - it's not important who comes along, some days it might be no one - just that people know if they want to meet, this is the time and this is the place.

Pixel 4 Startups – Advertising as Recessionbuster

A new project is about to start and will probably go online end of the month. Pixel 4 Startups takes up the idea of the Million Dollar Homepage. One pixel will cost 1€ for one year and 2€ for a lifetime ad. The minimum ad size is 5×5 pixel. 70% of the money will be reinvested into start-ups. Start-ups will be able to apply for amounts up to 50.000€, but smaller shares are also possible and welcome.

The difference to the original is certainly that the money will be mostly re-invested. Another difference will be that a large tool-tip will appear, when somebody hovers over an ad, so that even small ads will have a better exposure.

What do you think of that idea? Would you buy an ad? Tell us your thoughts and get a free 100pixel ad for 6 months…

Summer Holiday Break & Westnet Expanding

At the last meeting on the 12th of August 2009 in the the Royal T.F. only four Mayo-based entrepreneurs attended. Unfortunately no new faces were seen. The attendants were: Paul Cunnane from Westnet, John Moran from mayoplus.ie, Frank Samms from Eirecast / Westerly Visions and myself.

Paul announced that they had set up a new sector on Achill Island, giving broadband access to nearly the whole island now (unfortunately still except The Valley, Dugort East and parts of Cashel). Dooagh and Keel had been connected in early summer. About a month ago a deflector on Corraun was activated, covering the village of Corraun, Cloghmore and Dereens. The sector that was added lately covers Dooega and Achill Sound. I will give an update on the exacto coverage on the Achill Online Internet Solutions Blog as soon as Paul has sent me some more details.

Cruisecamp – Barcamp on a Shannon Cruiser

Last Thursday, on July the 30th, 2009 I attended the Cruisecamp organised by Johnny Beirne from DownloadMusic. It was fantastic!

The cruise started in Carrick-on-Shannon, heading up and down the Shannon for about 45min each way, to give the nearly 75 attendants a pleasurable 3 hour event. The Cruiser itself was sponsored by the Leitrim County Enterprise Board. A little, but very tasty snack was sponsored and served by The Country Cooking Company and other spot prizes were offered by Reverb Studios, Absolute Safety, Leitrim Design House, Gilroy & Murphy Solar Systems and Wispy’s Discount Stores.

The event started at 6pm sharp with the boat leaving Carrick and some food beeing served. Afterwards James marting from TeamLife hosted a networking Bingo, in which we had to fill out a card with 12 questions like for example “Who has Blue Eyes?” or “Who has been abroad in the last 4 weeks?”, giving the name, company and hobby of the person as an answer. This game was great, as it mixed the tables again, that had firmely settled for the food.

After the Bingo, networking went on all over the boat, at the bar (where unfortunately a pint cost 4.40€), at the tables and on the fore and aft deck. I got to talk to about a dozend people, making some very intersting contacts. I believe that it was overall a very successfull event for all attendants.

I will certainly be going to the next event again and I hope it’ll maybe run for an hour more.

12th Mayo Open Coffee Club Meeting

Sorry for this short report coming so late, but I was quite busy with attending the Cruisecamp in Carrick-On-Shannon and in addition some not so pleasant private things came up, too.

The 12th Mayo Open Coffee Club meeting was held on the 29th of July in the IiBC in Castlebar amongst the eleven attending, there were three new faces:

We also saw a few faces, we hadn’t seen for a while, like Frank Samms from Eircast and Sean McGuire from Aniar IT Services.

It was an interesting round and a good mixture of open discussion and questions. One thing put forward for discussion was Frank Samms idea of a vertical mouse pad, which he wanted to be made out of recyclable materials.

I asked the question, if a summer break for the Open Coffee Club was a good idea. Al Steger-Lewis from mylifelists gave a very short answer to that: The Open Coffee Club is supposed to meet on a regular base, even if there is only one showing up… You’re right Al, how could I forget :-)

The the question of an Open Coffee Club BBQ some-when in September came up again, the response was mixed and not very energetic. It seems that quite a few people would attend, but nobody really wanted to commit to the organisation, except Frank Samms. Anyway, we want to go for it, so whoever wants to join the comittee, please contact me.
